See the Wolf (response to Hurricane Katrina)

The weatherman reports
A storm seen from a distance

(A boy cries wolf)

Miles from Gulf Ports
The US remains its resistance

(A boy cries wolf)

Terror over seas
Blows against the current
It's heading this way
But the levees will deter it

(A boy cries wolf)

The hurricane rains hit

(A boy cries wolf)

The flooding is unmeasured
Disaster on a budget
Levees fail under pressure

The land is moved by wind
And people swept in waves
The country watched the news
The helpless to be saved

(A boy cries wolf)

Most forgot how to heed the signs
But branches stretch up and surrender
Hoping the storm is over
But rescue efforts are hindered

And many are left behind
Those who could flee, fled
They left their homes under water
And their neighborhoods dead

A commuter disaster to behold
But don't call highway patrol
Merge slowly and follow the flow
The government will gain control

But many waited for refuge
And then were called refugees
"A person who flees to a foreign country"
But they’re just living in poverty

(A boy sees wolf)

The media reports the devastation
The raping, the shooting, the looting
A nation waits for State of Emergency
While people sat on rooftops brooding

Many elders wait for the word
And generations of families split apart
Waiting for buses at Convention Centers
While sanity is left in the dark

Evacuation leads to migration
While hearts open and welcome the laden
Katrina sweeps across the nation
Yet trust in administration, is fading

(Wolf sees boy)

Rain couldn't wash away the poor
Proud America leaves an ugly stain
Bureaucracy is only one excuse
Cause the unfortunate still feel the disdain
